Senior Designer

Semi:Formal is hiring a Senior Designer. This is a senior-level role for an experienced multidisciplinary designer who can lead projects from concept through execution. This is a full-time, in-person position based at our studio in Ferndale, Michigan. You'll help shape brand identities, digital experiences, and environmental graphics while collaborating closely with the Principal Creative and mentoring junior designers along the way.

Semi:Formal is a small, multidisciplinary creative studio based in Ferndale, MI. We work across branding, digital, and experiential projects with clients in Detroit and beyond. Our team is intentionally small, giving every designer the opportunity to have a meaningful impact on the work, our culture, and the direction of the studio.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead creative projects from strategy through final execution

  • Develop thoughtful identity systems, visual languages, and design concepts

  • Present work and communicate design rationale to clients with confidence

  • Collaborate with the Principal Creative to shape project direction and elevate the work

  • Mentor and provide feedback to junior designers

  • Work across branding, digital, environmental, print, and motion projects as needed

  • Contribute to critiques, internal creative reviews, and the evolution of our studio

What We’re Looking For

  • Approximately 6–10 years of professional experience in a creative studio or agency environment

  • An exceptional portfolio demonstrating strong conceptual thinking — not just polished execution

  • Deep understanding of typography, composition, color, and visual systems

  • Experience leading projects and collaborating directly with clients

  • Ability to think strategically and connect design decisions back to project goals

  • Comfortable giving and receiving constructive critique

  • Curious, humble, collaborative, and motivated to continually improve your craft

  • Someone excited to help shape the next chapter of a growing studio

Bonus Points

  • Experience designing websites or digital products

  • Motion design or animation experience

  • Environmental graphics, signage, or placemaking experience

  • Illustration

  • Photography or art direction experience
